Four levels, one path

Our courses sit on South Africa’s National Qualifications Framework (NQF) — a national scale of learning levels, from NQF 1 (complete beginner) up to NQF 4 (about matric level). The higher you go, the more advanced the skills — and the more doors open.

Two course types — both accredited

Two are skills programmes (Handicraft Sewer & Seamstress) — shorter, focused part-qualifications. Two are full qualifications (Sewing Machine Operator & Pattern Making Assistant) — larger and more in-depth. Both are accredited and both end in a real certificate.

Accredited from top to bottom

Every course is accredited by the QCTO — South Africa’s quality body for occupational training. You earn an official certificate after a final assessment. (We deliver the training; the QCTO issues the certificate.)

Each one is a real destination

You don’t have to climb the whole path. Take one course, start earning, and stop there — or keep going. The credits you earn carry forward toward the next level, so you can climb whenever you’re ready.

Do you need to take them in order?

No. Entry is based on your level of schooling or experience, so you can begin at whatever level you already qualify for. Handicraft Sewer is open to everyone.

Where to start

Most people begin with Handicraft Sewer — our beginner course. No experience needed; you only need to be able to read and communicate.

Handicraft Sewer

Sew from scratch
The entry course — open to everyone. A skills programme (part-qualification) that ends in a Statement of Results.

What it’s about

Our beginner course, and the one most people start with. It takes you from zero and teaches you foundational sewing — making basic garments and household items from ready-made patterns, by hand and machine. This is where you begin.

What you’ll learn

  • Choose and read a sewing pattern, and pick the right fabrics and notions
  • Set up your work area, sewing machines and over-lockers
  • Lay out, mark and cut fabric and trims
  • Sew and construct basic garments and household items, by hand and machine
  • Finish them neatly — trims, ironing and pressing
  • Work to a customer’s specification and present your finished products
  • Handle the basics of money, time and running a small sewing business

Where it can take you

A real, recognised foundation in sewing — and the natural first step. From here you can carry on to the higher levels and keep growing, or simply enjoy a skill you’ll have for life.

Who it’s for

Complete beginners of any age who want to learn to sew from scratch.

Entry requirement

Open entry — no experience, no previous course and no school certificate. You only need to be able to read and communicate.

Sewing Machine Operator

You become a professional machinist
A full occupational qualification — ends in a nationally recognised Occupational Certificate.

What it’s about

The factory route. It teaches you to operate industrial sewing machines to a production standard — the qualification clothing manufacturers hire for.

What you’ll learn

Operate industrial machines — lock-stitch, over-lock and cover-seam — to a production standard, read a work instruction, hit quality and output targets, and spot and fix faults on the line.

Where it can take you

A job as a machinist / sewing machine operator in clothing, textile and leather-goods manufacturing. It also supports self-employment doing alterations or small-scale production.

Who it’s for

Anyone wanting employment in a clothing factory.

Entry requirement

About a Grade 9–10 level, or three years’ hands-on sewing experience. Finishing Handicraft Sewer also meets this — but it isn’t required.

NQF 3Skills Programme36 credits

Seamstress

You become a dressmaker & tailor
A skills programme (part-qualification) — ends in a Statement of Results.

What it’s about

The dressmaking-and-alterations route — and a real step up. This is where you stop working only from a pattern and start working on real people: fitting garments to an individual, and altering the clothes they already own.

What you’ll learn

Take a customer’s measurements, construct complete garments that fit them, and alter and repair existing clothes — hemming, taking in, resizing, restyling — plus custom, made-to-measure work.

Where it can take you

Run your own dressmaking-and-alterations business, or work in an alterations shop, bridal boutique or workroom.

Who it’s for

People who want to become skilled dressmakers or run an alterations business.

Entry requirement

Around a Grade 10–11 level, ideally with some sewing basics behind you — or a lower sewing course or relevant experience.

NQF 4Full Qualification77 credits

Pattern Making Assistant

You assist in creating the patterns
A full occupational qualification — ends in a nationally recognised Occupational Certificate.

What it’s about

The design-and-technical route, closest to fashion design. You learn to create the patterns that garments are built from — the bridge between a designer’s idea and a finished garment.

What you’ll learn

Draft, adapt and cut patterns to specification — the technical foundation behind every garment.

Where it can take you

Entry roles like pattern-making assistant or sample machinist in design houses and manufacturers, and the foundation toward becoming a full pattern maker, a grader, or launching your own label.

Who it’s for

Aspiring fashion designers and anyone drawn to the technical, creative side.

Entry requirement

Around a Matric (Grade 12) level, ideally with sewing experience — or a lower sewing qualification.
