What it’s about
Our beginner course, and the one most people start with. It takes you from zero and teaches you foundational sewing — making basic garments and household items from ready-made patterns, by hand and machine. This is where you begin.
What you’ll learn
- Choose and read a sewing pattern, and pick the right fabrics and notions
- Set up your work area, sewing machines and over-lockers
- Lay out, mark and cut fabric and trims
- Sew and construct basic garments and household items, by hand and machine
- Finish them neatly — trims, ironing and pressing
- Work to a customer’s specification and present your finished products
- Handle the basics of money, time and running a small sewing business
Where it can take you
A real, recognised foundation in sewing — and the natural first step. From here you can carry on to the higher levels and keep growing, or simply enjoy a skill you’ll have for life.

Complete beginners of any age who want to learn to sew from scratch.
Entry requirement
Open entry — no experience, no previous course and no school certificate. You only need to be able to read and communicate.
