The purpose of this skills program is to prepare a learner to operate as a Handicraft Sewer. A Handicraft Sewer uses commercial or training patterns and applies hand or machine sewing techniques to produce basic garments.
A qualified learner will be able to:
· Select and prepare patterns, materials, machines and work area for sewing garments and household articles.
· Cut and construct garments and household articles using hand and machine sewing techniques.
· Present finished sewn garments and household articles/products to customers.

Continuous Assessment
This type of assessment requires a practical demonstration by the learner to assess applied competence and successful completion of learning in the skills programme. It includes both work integrated learning assessment and summative assessment.

- Correct materials and tools are selected according to the specification.
- Correct trims and tools are selected according to cutting requirements.
- Fabric is laid according to cutting requirement.
- Correct pattern pieces are placed and secured on fabric according to cutting specifications to achieve optimum fabric utilisation.
- Garment parts and notches are accurately cut according to pattern specifications
- Garment parts are bundled ready for sewing.
- Workplace is prepared for sewing machines.
- Sewing machine is prepared and machine-setup is completed to achieve the required stitch and quality as per requirements.
- Safety measures are followed when using a sewing machine.

Supervised Assessment
The following practical tasks are demonstrated for correct application:
- Prepare the workplace using fabrics, patterns, notions, customer specifications, trims and cutting tools to achieve a well-constructed product.
- Select and prepare the workplace, sewing machines and over-lockers using tools, attachments, guides, needles and threads to achieve a functionally operational machine
- Lay, cut and mark selected fabric and trims using appropriate tools to prepare for the construction of garments and household articles and products.
- Construct garments and household articles/products using basic hand and machine sewing techniques to produce sewn garments or household articles/products.
- Finish the sewn garments and household articles/products with suitable trims and correct ironing and pressing techniques.
