No — you do not need matric to study sewing in South Africa, and you don't need Grade 10 or any school certificate either.
On an accredited course like our Handicraft Sewer programme, there's genuinely no schooling requirement at all.
Why so many talented people count themselves out
People assume that because they didn't finish school, the door to a proper, recognised qualification is closed to them. In sewing, it simply isn't — and that's by design.
Our course sits at NQF Level 1, the foundational entry point of the national framework. It's set there on purpose: so that anyone, whatever their schooling, can walk in and come out with a nationally recognised, QCTO-accredited qualification.
If you look at some sewing jobs — say at a big clothing company — you'll see “Matric / Grade 12” listed. That's the employer's preference for a general school qualification.
But the trade itself doesn't require matric. And here's the powerful part: an accredited sewing qualification gives you a real, recognised credential to put on the table instead — one that speaks directly to the skill the job actually needs.
It's often a stronger card than matric alone, because it proves you can do the work.
And a job isn't the only path
With the foundations you master here, you can sew to order, take on custom work, and build your own label — no boss, no matric box to tick. We teach the business side too: measuring clients, costing your work, and working with customers. Plenty of our students have turned that into their own income.
So what do you actually need?

- That's it — no matric, no experience, no background in sewing
- Everything else — machines, fabric, tools, patterns — is provided
