A sewing course teaches you to make clothes — the hands-on craft of turning fabric and a pattern into a finished garment. A fashion design course teaches you to dream them up — sketching, trend theory, and usually a multi-year diploma. And here's the honest truth most people never hear: you do not need a fashion design degree to sew beautifully, design your own clothes, or make your own patterns. The making skills are their own discipline — and they're the ones that actually pay.
Busting the myth (it costs people years and fortunes)
Many assume that to be ‘properly’ competent — to design their own pieces, draft their own patterns, run their own label — they must first go and get a fashion degree. That's not true. Fashion design is a wonderful path if your dream is to design collections and work in the industry at that level. But if what you really want is to make gorgeous clothes with your own hands and earn from it, the fast, real route is to learn to sew — and build from there.
A whole pathway, not one course
This is where Sew & Grow is different: we don't offer one course, we offer a whole pathway, so you can go as far as your ambition takes you — without ever setting foot in a university.
Follow that pathway with consistent lessons and something lovely happens: over roughly two years, our students effectively reach real, active fashion-design competence — designing and making their own clothes, drafting their own patterns — the very things people thought they needed a degree for. And honestly? They don't want to leave. They finish courses and keep coming back, bringing their own projects, growing alongside us — part of the family.
Before you sign up for years and a fortune of design school, ask yourself honestly what you actually want: to design on paper, or to make real, sellable things with your hands — and build, step by step, toward designing them too? If it's the latter, you can start right here, this term.
The Handicraft Sewer course
It's step one of the pathway — complete beginner to confident garment constructor — and from here our advanced courses take you into pattern design, cutting and beyond, until you're designing and making your own clothes. No university required.
Everything is provided — every machine, all the fabric, tools and patterns — because your only job here is to learn.

i almost signed up for a 3 year design diploma thinking it was the only way to make my own clothes 😩 so glad i read this first
So glad too, Palesa. A design diploma is wonderful if designing collections is the dream — but to make and sell your own pieces, learning to sew and building from there is faster, cheaper and just as real. Start with the foundations and see how far it takes you. 🌿
been coming back for the advanced courses after handicraft and im literally drafting my own patterns now. no degree 😄
if i want to eventually do production/factory sewing, is that a separate course?
Yes, Lerato — that's the sewing machine operator qualification, aimed at industrial, high-volume work. Many students do the Handicraft foundation first, then specialise. Message us and we'll map out the pathway that fits where you want to end up.
