No — you need zero experience to start, provided you choose a course that's actually built for beginners. Our Handicraft Sewer course assumes you have never touched a sewing machine, and starts you from the very first stitch. In fact, complete beginners are exactly who it's designed for.
Here's the reassuring truth we've watched play out for 40 years: the vast majority of the more than 10,000 students who've come through our school started with nothing — no experience, no family who sewed, no idea how a machine even worked. And they left as capable garment constructors.
The reason it works is that we build the skill in the right order, brick by brick. You don't get thrown at a dress on day one. You start by getting genuinely comfortable with the machine and an overlocker — threading them, controlling them, fixing the little hiccups — and then you make your first simple project. From there, each of the 13 projects layers one new skill onto the last, climbing gently from a drawstring bag all the way up to a fully tailored shirt. By the time you reach the hard stuff, it doesn't feel hard, because every step before it prepared you.
Starting without experience can actually be an advantage — you have no bad habits to unlearn, no half-remembered techniques picked up wrong from a video. You learn it properly the first time. (It's part of why we've kept a 100% pass rate.)
So whatever your starting point, there's a way in that fits you:
Two ways in. Want the full, accredited route, and you're a beginner? The in-person Handicraft Sewer course is built for exactly you. Prefer something more flexible? We also offer part-time and online courses you can do from home, with a supportive membership alongside you every step of the way. Either way, no experience is needed to begin.
The Handicraft Sewer course
It assumes you've never touched a machine — starting from the first stitch and building brick by brick through 13 projects — because complete beginners aren't just welcome here, they're exactly who the course is designed for.
Everything is provided — every machine, all the fabric, tools and patterns — because your only job here is to learn.

is the online option also fine for a total beginner or is that better for people who already sew a bit?
Total beginners do brilliantly on it, Nandi — it's guided from the very first basic, with a membership and real teacher support, not just videos. Message us and we'll help you pick between in-person and online for where you're starting from.
started with zero experience and honestly the ‘no bad habits to unlearn’ thing was real, i learnt it clean the first time
i've genuinely never touched a machine and was scared id be the only clueless one 😅 good to know thats literally the starting point
That's the starting point for almost everyone here, Palesa — you'll be in wonderful company. We begin at the machine itself and build up gently, so ‘never touched one’ becomes ‘confident’ quickly. Come exactly as you are. 🌿
