Absolutely — men can and do sew, and sewing has a long, proud history as a men's trade. The idea that it's ‘just for women’ is a modern stereotype, not a fact, and it's cost a lot of talented men a skill they'd have loved. Our courses are open to everyone, and men are genuinely welcome.
It's worth remembering the history here, because it flips the stereotype on its head. Tailoring — the craft of making fine, fitted clothing — was for centuries a highly respected profession dominated by men, and at the top of the industry, it still is. Many of the world's most celebrated fashion designers and master tailors are men. One of our own alumni, Gert-Johan Coetzee, started at a sewing table right here before becoming one of South Africa's most celebrated designers.
